Collections and management remain with proprietors Celia Duthie and Nicholas Hunt and much of what we have exhibited in our former designation, Salt Spring Woodworks, we continue to show; our focus is on landscape art, studio furniture, sculpture and fine art by many talented artists throughout the North West. We represent Michael Dennis, Brent Comber, Judson Beaumont, Peter Pierobon, Kurt Dexel, Christian Woo, Arnt Arntzen, Enrico Konig, Paul Tellier, Ken Guenter, Jeff Trigg, Francis Lemieux, Michael Moore, Seth Rolland, Ben Burnett, Darren Bertuccio, David Greig, Wes Giesbrecht, Richard Tetrault, and Kurt Frost in a constantly changing and growing roster of designers and artists.

The Duthie Gallery will launch the spring/summer season with a May show of new stonework by Ron Crawford.

Summer Lights will light up again in July with illuminated installations by Peter Pierobon, Brent Comber, Ken Guenter and Judson Beaumont. The NIGHT GALLERY will be open from 9 pm to 11pm Thursday to Monday night July and August.

Salt Spring Woodworks is about to become the Celia Duthie Gallery. We feel that the gallery has evolved over our six years from woodwork to art and that distinction needs to be made. We will continue to exhibit the mix of studio furniture, sculpture, prints and landscape art that we now show. The artists hitherto represented by the gallery remain and many new artists are in the wings with fresh new works.

The second Summer Lights show will open July 1st-- this year featuring the dazzling and shapely lanterns of Peter Pierobon. The Night Gallery, a huge hit last summer, will be open (at least) 5 nights a week 9 - 11, with extended display space and more illumnation.

The name change accompanies a physical change as well; the back room of the gallery was damaged by falling branches, the roof pierced five times, one javelin branch impaled in the floor, Richard Tetrault’s wonderful print of the Lion’s Gate bridge - stabbed right in the centre! So we will be beginning a renovation and slight expansion to be ready in March. At the moment only the front part of the gallery and the cabin are open - Friday,Saturday Sunday 10 - 5 or by appointment.

Winter Lights

Winter Lights: A new show of lamps and lanterns by Peter Pierobon will be on display at Salt Spring Woodworks in December.

Peter’s red and yellow cedar lanterns represent common objects such as ‘Plumb’ from a carpenters plumb bob, fauna as in ‘Bird’ and flora, ‘Yellow Cap’. They are elegant hanging sculptures perfect for landscapes, patios and entranceways; they cheer up gloomy days and light up dark nights and are very effective against SAD (seasonal affective disorder).

Peter Pierobon was educated in Rochester, New York with Wendell Castle, the leading artist in contemporary studio furniture design; he has exhibited and taught internationally for more than 30 years and his pieces are in collections from the Smithsonian to the Bellevue Art Museum. His always intriguing and constantly surprising work explores fresh relationships between the primitive and the sophisticated, traditional and modern.

Winter hours at the gallery are 10 am to 5 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday or by appointment.

RELIEF PRINTMAKING WORKSHOPS

SINGLE WORKSHOP - $75 / BOTH DAYS - $125

Create your own unique prints, learning different methods of wood and linoleum printmaking !

This intensive, two day workshop will introduce everyone to the main techniques of relief printmaking. The highly portable nature of relief printmaking allows the artist to create a series, or edition, of prints in virtually any size of studio. Participants will gain a good understanding of both the materials and techniques of printing, and will learn how to transform their own drawings into a print format, transferring their drawings to the blocks. We will work with different cutting techniques for block carving, and will explore reduction processes for color printing (day #1) and multiple block printing (day #2) Various print papers will enhance the artists understanding of the potential in these approaches. By the end of these workshops participants will have several prints to take home.

Vancouver based painter, muralist and printmaker, Richard Tetrault has been making relief prints for over thirty years. He has exhibited his prints in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, in Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, France, Mexico and the United States. His prints appear in numerous private and public collections worldwide. Tetrault’s print work is featured in several published books, (Oppenheimer Park, The Suzie A, and the Alcuin award-winning Signs of the Times, Anvil Press) Richard’s prints are exhibited at Salt Spring Woodworks gallery.

Peter Pierobon @ City Lights

Peter Pierobon’s three new art lanterns lit up the IDS WEST show last week in Vancouver.

Designed and refined from his first lanterns: ‘Plumb’ and ‘Weir’--exhibited this past summer in 'Summer Lights' at the gallery, the new works reflect Peter’s constant perfecting of form and function.

Here is Plumb 2 photographed in a garden with the darkening night and the lights of the ships in the harbour; they are dazzling, scintillating, luminous; they enliven the night.

The IDS West show was an inspiring success; it was a pleasure to put together, with the much appreciated help of Jason Heard and our ‘good looking’ artists; some significant sales ensued as well as the discovery of many fresh new furniture design talents, also ‘good looking’.* (*Mac Perry’s column October 16)

Salt Spring Woodworks at IDS WEST October 14-17 , Vancouver Trade & Convention Centre

Salt Spring Woodworks is coming to Vancouver's Interior Design Show West in the new Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre from October 14 - 17. Please join us in the lounge to see "City Lights" - an exhibition of illuminated installations and lanterns by Vancouver designer/ artists, Brent Comber, Judson Beaumont and Peter Pierobon.

These three distinctly different artists are leaders in a dynamic cultural movement catching fire in New York, London and Tokyo. They are creators who have punched from craft through to art; moving from reproduction and rustic furniture to art studio furniture and functional sculpture. Just like the city where they live, their work defines a distinctive 'Vancouver Style' that is fresh, original, playful and sophisticated; with conscientiousness about the sustainability of materials, such as value- added wood, particularly welcome in a province whose main economy is forestry.

Brent Comber's illuminated "Shattered Spheres" and "Shattered Disc" are inspired by the 2006 storm that left Stanley Park with tragic swathes of downed ancient trees. They comprise some of the cedar shards from the salvage, doubly creating artistic order out of the shambles and reminding us of the forces and forests that surround us.

Peter Pierobon's exploration into new technologies of lighting produced the elegant and enticing "Plumb" (hanging) and "Weir" (standing), which are eight foot tall, low voltage lanterns which cast flickering, crosshatched light, transmitting the colours of red and yellow cedar.

Judson Beaumont has followed on his whacky 'Squiddy' tables and benches with the eight foot tall Black and White 'Tall Squiddy Guards' who stand guard in the dark and illuminate with weird and squiggly lights and shadows.

Come to IDS WEST and see the range, originality and quality of Vancouver's studio furniture designers. October 14 - 17 - in Vancouver. If you miss it in Vancouver, you’ll just have to visit beautiful Salt Spring Island to experience Vancouver’s hottest new art industry.

Peter Pierobon's work is both conceptual and sensual; his style is spare, his reference his natural and cultural environment, and his craft is meticulous. The stately standing lantern, Weir, is 8' high, 36" x 30" at the base, made of yellow cedar slats with the low voltage halogen light at the top casting a fresh bright yellow cross-hatched light onto the ground and the trees.

The 8' hanging Plumb is made of red cedar slats with a low voltage halogen lamp in a water proof fixture at the plumb bob base. It casts vertical shafts of light with a slight rosy tinge.

Chair Totem is 14' high made of tubular stainless steel, one of many chair studies that Peter Pierobon has done in his career. An early Chair Totem (#1) made of sheet bronze is the central piece in the foyer of the Bellevue Arts Museum. At the time of its installation there was some controversy over the title but it was resolved that a chair is a totem of our times, signifying the advent of science and literacy and the rise of the thinking arts.

Judson Beaumont's tall white Squiddy Guard lantern casts the brightest albeit weirdest light into the darkness. Brent Comber deLIGHTS!

Alex Waterhouse- Hayward , the Karsh of Vancouver, came last week to do the tricky night photographs of the illuminated installations of Summer Lights. He took the photographs with long exposures, in the pitch dark , with the only illumination the shards of light emitted through the cracks in Brent Comber's shattered cedar spheres, and the diffused light from the carved cedar lanterns.

Lighten Up

First, Judson Beaumont's Squiddies took Manhattan and then they took Salt Spring Island.

Here is the luminous 8' tall White Squiddy Guard, guarding the garden at Salt Spring Woodworks, with companion, Black Squiddy Guard, who gives off a rather darker light, and (here) the Squiddy Bench - casting kaleidoscopic light around the willow tree.

Come at night to see the illuminated installations of Judson Beaumont, Brent Comber and Peter Pierobon. They're dazzling, like nothing else you've ever seen. Summer Lights is a rare experience of astounding original art in nature.

Summer Lights Up

Here is the hanging of Brent Comber's 'Chandelier' at Salt Spring Woodworks for Summer Lights. From his sensitive wood selection and the delicate carving of the butts to the light balance achieved with the highest tech spinners and aerial hardware; these are very conscious creations, completely here and now, and now, with elaborate invisible wiring , everything is illuminated. Summer Lights lights up the night.

The deep irony and considerable effort of hoisting large and heavy modified tree trunks up into the branches is not lost on anyone. Here are Brent Comber, Nick Hunt, and Joe Somebody in his agile cherry picker. During the 3 hour installation Joe was 40 feet up in the high canopy of the maple tree, getting the hanging of the Cedar Pendants just right and taking pictures of mouths- wide- open baby birds in their nest on his iphone.

A sighting of his new work on display at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York in May. The new Shattered Sphere takes his 'Shattered' series to new eye-popping heights.

Brent Comber writes "The pieces in my Shattered line embody the human need to create order out of chaos and convey the idea of energy being released during the exuberant process of creation."

For our show 'Summer Lights' opening July 1st, Brent is adding the dimension of light to the Shattered Sphere; he has "taken this concept of released energy one step further by embedding low voltage LED lights in the small fissures between the sections of wood of which these pieces are composed. This creates a luminosity that radiates from within the pieces, giving the impression that they are literally bristling with electricity and bursting with energy." Shattered Light!

Also new from Brent's wildly expanding wood oeuvre are his Wood Drops. Sensual, full-bellied, pregnant, with the apparent tension of the water drop and a deep irony of material and appearance. Decorative wall pieces, reminiscent of Anish Kapoor's wall swellings, these Wood Drops' are a fresh leap of Brent's formidable inventive energies.

Several very hot Vancouver furniture designer/makers are currently in New York showing off at the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair). Vancouver is known as a very hot spot in new furniture ideas. We attended the famed ICFF 2 years ago ; among the much the same sort of ‘magazine style’ furniture with the dominant design materials mafia of chrome, leather, glass; the Vancouver mostly-wood exhibits were eye-popping.

Here are some of the pieces on exhibit in New York this year by Judson Beaumont, Kurt Dexel and Christian Woo. Coming soon to a gallery on Salt Spring Island.

Summer Lights, Summer Nights

Upping the derring-do of our 2009 summer show, Inside / Outside, with Brent Comber’s 'China Grove' suspended from a ring 40 feet up in the trees, this year - ‘Chandelier’ -- Brent's illuminated multi-trunk cedar lantern, strung up in the big firs around the gallery. Also his new light-emitting ‘Shattered Spheres’ will be nestled in woodchips looking, for all the world, like alien eggs about to hatch! Peter Pierobon is working on a fibreoptic lamp and large and delicate hanging lanterns and several other artists are promising to 'surprise us'.

Titled ‘Summer Lights’ and opening July 1st, this show will feature outdoor illuminated installations by Brent Comber, Judson Beaumont, Peter Pierobon, and Ken Guenter. Inside exhibitions include many new art furniture pieces by our many talented furniture designer/makers with a special emphasis on new interior lighting design; as well as a new show of Richard Tetrault’s accomplished woodblock prints - ‘City ‘Lights’.

The gallery continues to feature designer/maker extraordinaire, Judson Beaumont and his remarkable inventive pieces such as the resin barrels and squares, squiddy tables (as seen in photo here), and his much beloved Little Black Dresser. The always evolving and discovering Brent Comber has a number of compelling new multi-tasking shapes: a small table or bench form called ‘Serene’, Pok, two large curvaceous solid forms and his favourite occasional tables/perches/plinths: Buds, T-cups and Alder Cubes.

Starting July 1st, Salt Spring Woodworks will be open on Friday nights till 11pm, for best night-time viewing of ‘Chandelier’, ‘Shattered Spheres’ and other illuminated installations.

Little Black Dresser

Judson is taking 3 of the Little Black Dressers to New York for the ICFF - International Contemporary Furniture Show - May 15 - 18. They will hang in a row, just like dresses on a rack. You can also see the Little Black Dresser and many other creations by Judson Beaumont at Salt Spring Woodworks on Salt Spring Island.

Here the Little Black Dresser is mounted on a wall of beetle pine wood. Judson is maximizing the value-added to the beetle pine much more surprisingly and amusingly than anyone else.

A recent commission for Judson was a beetle pine 'river rock' entrance to the Premier's office in Vancouver. Here at the opening is Premier Gordon Campbell, Judson Beaumont and his staff.

The inimitable Judson Beaumont is feature artist at Salt Spring Woodworks' spring 2010 show -- What Next?

Famed maker of wildly imaginative children's furniture and sophisticated and ironic work from custom environments to limited edition designer furniture, Judson Beaumont creates delightful and always functional works of art. Shown here are the self-explanatory Little Black Dresser and The River Rock Cabinet that uses blue-tinged beetle pine wood, cut and tumbled to look like 'river rocks', on the drawer fronts, a brilliant way of highlighting and addressing the pine beetle problem.

Judson started his design business -- Straight Line Design-- right out of art school in the 80's; he opened his studio at 1000 Parker Street, a beloved old fire-trap of a building that has become the centre of the happening downtown east-side art culture. Nowadays he does work all over the world, commissions and custom environments in New York, Tokyo, London, Seoul and Greece; some of his recent large projects include Cotsen's Children's Library, Princeton University, Newark Beth Israel Children's Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital, St John's NFLD Airport, and the Vancouver Airport. He received the BC Creative Achievement Award in 2009.

Judson's work is original, playful and engaging; it makes us smile and takes us away beyond ordinary furniture. His genius is in his ceaseless seeking of the next idea and design and his work never ceases to surprise and amaze. "It's not what we have done, it's what we're going to do next"
